The Chattanooga Rescue Mission has been in the city of Chattanooga ministering to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the homeless in our community since 1975. Our Christian Life Program (CLP) is in place to help those in need of overcoming drug and alcohol problems and other major issues in life. Our current facilities enable us to house 28 men in our shelter guest room and 12 in our men's CLP dormitory. The women's shelter guest room can accommodate 12 women and our women’s CLP dormitory has the ability to accept up to 8 women. This enables us to house a total of 60 men and women. Last year we served over 36,000 meals and supplied over 20,000 beds for our guests.
We are a non-profit 501(c)3 faith-based organization that believes that God’s Word has all the answers to man’s sin problem. It is our goal to share God’s saving grace with all of our guests. One of the first steps in this process is providing food, shelter and clothing to those in need. As we meet these base needs, we pray that God will open their hearts to any spiritual needs that they may have. Eighty percent of our funding comes from individuals within and around our community who believe in the work of the mission. An additional 10% comes from supporting churches and the remaining 10% comes from businesses and grants.
To the best of our knowledge, the Chattanooga Rescue Mission has the only long-term, free emergency shelter for women and children in our city. While there are other organizations that give assistance in this area a woman generally has to wait to be placed; therefore, she can not be helped in an emergency situation.
With the rise of socio-economic issues: the increase of foreclosures, rampant alcohol/drug abuse, etc. the need for alternative housing has probably never been greater. The Chattanooga Rescue Mission is seeking to do more to meet the burgeoning needs that have arisen. Through the purchase of another facility we plan to have a minimum of 80 beds to serve our current homeless population. The greater Chattanooga area has over 1,100 homeless and we are grateful to be able to play a small part in meeting the needs here in our city.
